AIRLINE PARTNERSHIPS >>
AIRLINE PARTNERSHIPS >>
Research funded by the FAA indicates that miscommunications between pilots and Air Traffic Control (ATC) are a common reason for fatal commercial aviation accidents (Prinzo et al., 2010, Reports 1-6). It was reported that “Regardless of how frequently they experienced problems with word meanings, for them, accent, speech rate, and pronunciation adversely affected their ability to understand word meanings to a greater extent than radio technique and the quality of ATCs radio equipment” (Prinzo et al., 2010, Report 2, p. 31). Unintelligible English can contribute to costly aviation accidents in terms of tremendous financial payouts and human loss of life. The cost of aviation accidents in the United States alone ranges from $1.64 billion to $4.64 billion a year (Sobieralski, 2013). Improvement in pilot’s intelligibility will assist in the maintenance of ICAO Level 4 English Standards and improve aviation safety margins.
Alpha Speech partners with airlines aiming to increase safety margins related to pilots’ communication abilities. The benefit of Alpha Speech’s patent-pending program is that it increases safety margins via intelligible speech. Assisting pilots to clearly communicate during an unforeseen emergency minimizes the risk of tragic loss of human life.

Dr. Katie Pierson, ClinScD, CCC-SLP, PESL-C
Dr. Katie Pierson is a leading expert at the intersection of speech-language pathology and aerospace, with nearly a decade of experience improving aviation safety through effective communication. As the founder of Alpha Speech, Dr. Pierson developed a patent-pending accent modification method designed to help non-native English-speaking pilots communicate clearly, reducing miscommunication risks with air traffic controllers.
Dr. Pierson’s grandfather, James Pierson, was a metallurgist hand-selected to join the elite team that developed the iconic SR-71 Blackbird. Inspired by his legacy of pushing boundaries in aerospace innovation, Dr. Pierson merged her passion for communication science with her interest in aviation, leading to groundbreaking research on accented speech safety in aviation.
Dr. Pierson’s work earned her the ASHA Distinguished Early Career Professional Award, and her research has been published in leading journals such as The Journal of Human Factors in Aviation and The Journal of Aerospace Psychology. Her contributions have been featured in platforms including The ASHA Leader, Women in Aerospace Magazine, and The Summit. In recognition of her achievements, she was named a 2024 Women’s Space Awards Pioneer for her contributions to both aerospace and speech-language pathology.
Dr. Pierson has developed strong connections with global colleagues in the aviation industry, having studied Women in Leadership at Harvard University, after being awarded a full scholarship by Women in Aviation International. She is committed to expanding the impact of her research, advocating for the integration of communication science to enhance verbal safety across aviation, aerospace, and space exploration. Dr. Pierson’s work ensures that every professional speaks with precision, power, and purpose.
Being understood using Aviation English is an international requirement for pilots, air traffic controllers, and flight crew.
